From transformation to outcomes

Technology is increasingly defining the future of pensions. As organisations respond to regulatory reform, growing member expectations, retirement innovation and the opportunities created by AI, the ability to modernise technology and administration capabilities has become a strategic imperative. However, successful transformation requires more than technology alone. It depends on how effectively organisations combine data, governance, operational change and human insight to deliver better outcomes for members.

Across this edition, we explore this challenge from multiple perspectives. Whether through targeted communications for members of the NHS Pension Scheme, preparations for wider pensions dashboards adoption, or the industry's evolving approach to retirement income and member support through Guided Retirement pathways, decumulation and buy-outs, a common theme emerges: technology and data create new possibilities, but real value is realised when they are combined with expertise and an understanding of how people make decisions.

The pace of change is accelerating. The Department for Work and Pensions' latest roadmap sets out an ambitious programme of reform, while new projections show defined contribution assets are expected to exceed £1 trillion and overtake defined benefit assets by 2031. At the same time, analysis highlighting more than £75 billion of taxable pension withdrawals by people who first accessed their pensions before age 65 demonstrates the growing importance of helping savers navigate increasingly complex retirement decisions.

These developments reinforce a conviction that sits at the heart of Lumera's approach. The biggest challenge facing Life and Pensions organisations is not implementing technology in isolation, but successfully delivering complex change across people, processes, data, governance and customer outcomes. By combining technology, pensions expertise, data transformation, behavioural science and explainable AI, organisations can move from strategy to implementation with confidence while reducing risk and accelerating tangible business value.

Our additional insights this quarter explore these themes further, including the value of long-term partnerships, turning AI strategy into measurable outcomes, and the role modern technology continues to play in shaping the future of Life and Pensions.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Together, we are helping build a more resilient, efficient and future-ready pensions ecosystem that delivers better outcomes for clients, schemes and members alike.
